The old saying “build a better mousetrap” has been around for years. IBM looks like they’ve done just that with their new chips which run 100 times faster than current transistors. The accomplishments of IBM are quite impressive:

The transistor achieved a speed of 500 gigahertz, which is more than 100 times speedier than the fastest PC chips sold today, and about 250 times faster than the typical mobile telephone chip, Meyerson said.

The possibilites are great for chips this fast. Wireless networks could see a huge boost in performance with much faster transistors. In fact, wireless communications could be looking at a pivotal moment in their history with this development.

The trouble with transistor technology is that the rest of the equipment necessary for high speed performance in computers isn’t fast enough to catch up. The transistor will also run much slower than advertised because of cooling factors. Still, the road forward has been paved for even great speed and performance.

Possible uses for faster chips include wireless devices that can transmit movies at watchable speeds. If they can achieve flicker-free screen resolution for mobile phones, this could be the hugest product going.
