The Justice System wasn’t happy with Enron, and the latest person to feel the wrath is Andrew Fastow, who was instrumental in engineering much of the financial subterfuge that the company was so famous for. It could have been worse for Fastow, but he’s made amends since his arrest:
Fastow, Enron’s former chief financial officer, had agreed to serve a maximum 10-year term when he pleaded guilty in 2004. But the judge said he deserved a lighter sentence because Fastow has been persecuted following Enron’s collapse and that his family has suffered enough.
Fastow was handcuffed and taken away to begin serving his sentence almost immediatedly. He didn’t appear remorseful:
“I know I deserve punishment,” Fastow said. “I accept it without bitterness.”
Fastow’s wife has already spent a year in prison for her role in the Enron debacle. For most investors, I’m not sure the punishment is severe enough?
Do you think the sentence should have been longer?
