New CEO Carol Bartz is not timid about wielding her axe to cut costs at former internet high-flyer Yahoo. The cuts are expected to be announced next Tuesday, when YHOO also releases earnings for the first quarter of 2009. According to the New York Times, several hundred jobs are expected to be snipped.

Yahoo has already cut around 2,400 jobs in the last two years as their market share declined in light of increased competition from Google. There are now slightly more than 13,000 employees at Yahoo.

Yahoo has really lost ground in the display-ad business as advertisers switched to different ad networks, in particular to Google. Yahoo, like many online giants, has decreased the price of ads in the face of diminishing demand.

Google is also expected to announce an erosion in sales revenue, although it’s not likely to be as dramatic as it was for Yahoo.

Carol Bartz, a former CEO of Autodesk (NASDAQ:ADSK) is expected to become the next CEO of Yahoo.com, (NASDAQ:YHOO) a major internet search engine and web portal, according to reports at the Wall Street Journal.

Bartz, 60, will replace Jerry Yang – one of the companies co-founders.

Jerry Yang has been criticized for his inability to make critical decisions regarding the company due to ‘emotional ties’ to the brand.

In recent years Yahoo has had stiff competition from other internet companies like Google and has turned down offers to be bought out by Microsoft.

Bartz holds a BA degree in computer science from the University of Wisconsin and is on the Board of Directors for Cisco Systems, Intel and still serves as executive Chairman at Autodesk.

Her appointment has yet to be formally announced. Yahoo said that Jerry Yang will step down as soon as the new CEO is officially named.

Recently Microsoft abandoned their bid to buyout Yahoo, but it doesn’t appear as if the fight for the internet company is over quite yet.

According to reports, Carl Icahn has swooped in and purchased 50 million shares of Yahoo stock and it’s believed Icahn is planning a proxy fight to oust the current Board of Directors at the company.

By taking such a large position, Icahn could force the company into a deal with another internet company like AOL or Microsoft. Or there’s always the option of teaming up with Google to deliver advertising to their portal visitors.

No matter how you look at it, Jerry Yang better prepare for a fight. Carl Icahn is one tough cookie.

What are your thoughts on Yahoo? Who would they best “integrate” with online?
