What is an accredited investor?
The term accredited investor applies to an investor, as defined by the Securities and Exchange Commission Regulation D, who is not one of the 35 people who are allowed to put money into a Private Limited Partnership.
In order to receive accreditation, the investor must have a net worth of at least $1 million, or he needs to have placed $150,000 into the deal.
The total investment cannot total more than 20% of the investor's net worth. The attraction for the Private Limited Partnership is that these wealthy investors can raise more money that non-accredited investors.
