Preferred Stock

What is preferred stock?

A preferred stock is a hybrid security which combines elements of both stocks and bonds.

Preferred stocks have a chance of appreciation, like common stocks, but like a bond, they do not give you a chance to vote for the management of a company. They also pay guaranteed, fixed amounts, just like bonds do. Preferred stock holders are paid in second in line in the event the company finds its way into financial trouble.
