The broad index (index funds) typically returns 8% per year, which would be $80,000 per year. Elite investors like Warren Buffet can return 20% yearly on a consistant basis, which would be $200,000 per year. You can mimic his investments with relatively good accuracy by purchasing Berkshite Hathaway stock. Those are your options for investing $1m with little risk. Anything else, you are on your own. I know people who have made 50% per year for more than three years; but I know many more people who've lost everything. If you choose this route, you can save yourself a lot of time by carefully researching the stocks you buy, and by using good risk management and diversification techniques. Hope this helps."
