Who is CramerWho is Cramer

Rickster said: "I take it you either dont watch TV or at least steer clear of the so called financial channels. Good man. I have a low opinion of Crammer. You are better off not knowing.
But if you really want to know, Google Jim Cramer."
Mr. Gekko said: "His books are worth more than his TV show. Although, his radio show isn't bad."
trickynick said: "He has a show on CNBC called "Mad Money." He used to run a hedge fund. He is fine to pay attention to as long as you keep him in his place. That is to say don't do whatever he says, just use him as a source of ideas of how to identify potential opportunities. The very fact that he has a show that talks about what stocks may be good investments puts pressure on him to keep finding new stocks to be talking about on his show, by virtue of that he is very often not going to be right about the specific stocks he recommends."

He's the guy who knows every stock in the Dow, Nasdaq and S&P500. Has Buy, Sell or Hold recommendations tattooed on the back of his hands for every one of them. He is hated by some, loved by most and makes a lot of money to do his job. Which is to be a funny TV personallity that gets the attention of the working class and the younger generation, to teach them about the Stock Market and how to use it. Which in turn brings new $$$ into the stock markets... One would think."
DaveinJapan said: "I have been following his street.com vids for a couple of months now...
One thing that stuck me as "funny" was that one day he said something like "I wouldn't touch anything right now", and then the next day he said "sell oil, and buy EVERYTHING ELSE".
Seriously. The very next day.
Sorry, but I think the guy is full of it. But...that's pretty much the vibe I get from all the so-called "experts", so Jim Cramer isn't any different. He's just well known (I guess)."
JCast3 said: "i dont know why people are down on cramer so much....as mentioned, so long as you dont live and die by his show you'll be fine....if you watch the show and actually do some DD on some of his picks, you will see there is plenty of good recommendation in there....
the guy is very smart and ran a hedge fund that netted 30+% a year over what 11 years or something....he's far from a blockhead...."
thezster said: "No - he's not a blockhead.... the trouble is.. he's an entertainer.... and, if you want to buy/sell based on entertainment value, so be it.... Otherwise - take what he says for what it's worth - pretty much nuthin....
On the other hand, there are plenty of suckers out there who follow his advice - thinking he's truly offering great deals.... if you can play off the emotions of idiots - you can make a couple of bucks... it's called "The Cramer Effect".
Look at it this way.... if someone joined this forum with the moniker "Cramer the God" - and started suggesting you buy/sell with the blatant enthusiasm that he protrudes on his show - you would write him off as a spammer.... Or, at least, the old timers here would... He'd get blasted to hell............"

Excellent point.
I personally think he is reckless and irresponsible in his recommendations. People like to give him credit for running a successful fund. Fine. But show me somone who has run a successful fund based on Cramer's TV show recommendations."

If you were running a fund and, like many funds, you had a small number of large positions that you held for months or even a year or two and had 3 or four other securities that you traded in and out of frequently, how interesting would it be to have a TV show that ran every weekday talking about what it is your fund is doing? It'd probably get old, wouldn't it? The point is that the performance of stock picks made by someone on a daily TV show says nothing about how successful they would be at running a hedge fund (and vice versa). For someone who recommends as many stocks as Cramer does (now matter how smart or skilled that person is), the statistical expectation would be that about as many would underperform the market as would outperform it on a risk-adjusted basis. As far as I know, this is about what happens with Cramer picks."

Right on Nick!"
dumaman said: "well I like his show, and do find him somewhat entertaining when he throws his book, his chairs into the wall, and puts bulls and bears in a stew pot or better yet sets them on fire or stabs them witha big booy knife. He is a smart man and im sure his hedge fund did real well.. How many stock picks does he throw out a day anyway? I tested all his picks out for 3 months on a simulator.. and welp.. so i went into red with in a few weeks and netted -40% from the start.. GO cramer gO!!"

Well said. :)"

You can't honestly say that when you watch the show he never provides a unique perspective in a stock or industry that piques your interest and gets you thinking, motivated, compelled, or something, about something he was talking about. I'm not saying I look to him for picks or advice... but he is definitely a fun entertainer and someone with perspectives worth analyzing. All in all, he gets 1 thumb up from me."

It tracks Cramer's "portfolio" and it's comparable to the S&P 500. Not great, not bad. I agree with whoever above said take what he says as suggestions, do your own research, and make your decisions based on that.
His book (sane investing in an insane world or whatever it's called), however, is excellent and I highly recommend it to anyone starting out in the stock market."

Come to think of it, most brokers aren't held accountable for their actions anyway...are they?"

No. That's why it can be a great job. For them. :th_coolio:"
