What "other" investments do you have?

bobjitsu said: "We had a discussion back in the day about what other investments people have. I found this... http://www.superiorinvestor.net/archive/index.php/t-39.html I still collect guns for investment, I like them and can sell them for cash in a minute. It's fun to have something you like to play with, hold and look at rather than just a piece of paper. What do you guys collect with the intent on selling in the future for $$?"

thezster said: "Hey BJ - long time no see... welcome back. Must be time for the holiday photos of your niece with the firepower."

Rickster said: "Lots of guns. For the same reasons as BobJ. Fun, liquid, hold value. Not a way to get rich though (unless SHTF). An airplane, mainly used for transportation, that doesnt depreciate because it is already depreciated out (old). It has the potential to become a collectors item some day. Surplus ammo bought way cheap. (decent investment if I dont shoot it all up). Land. It is a hunter's paradise. Hill, trees, creek, pond, native prairie and crop land (food plot and income). Almost all habitat types. That type of land is climbing fast around here. A nearly risk free trade with 5 to 1 leverage. Great investment and I get to play on it. Commodities. Unlike the way most play commodities, these positions are long term trades/investments. Fixed interest account (safety net). Fitness and health. The most important investments. Investments in knowledge and understanding make everything else work."

LongArm said: "
Fitness and health. The most important investments. Investments in knowledge and understanding make everything else work.
:th_dblthumb2: That Rickster is one smart cookie. I have no guns or coins or anything like that, but I do have an investment that perhaps a lot of people here don't have: I-Bonds. Bought 'em back in October of 2001 when the fixed rate was 3.00%. Right now they're paying a composite rate of 6.15%. Not bad for completely safe money."

Hanger said: "Ok well I guess I am a loser lol.... I like to collect pre 1968 baseball cards...yes I know...I know....its probably a horrible place to put money, but I enjoy doing it, and hopefully one day will be able to pass them to my son..... Other than that, I keep investing in my knowledge base.......hehe"

When the stress of trading is getting too much-It's nice to sit in front of it and play some of my favorite vinyl to unwind.:th_dblthumb2: http://i1.tinypic.com/23qzad1.jpg"

Mr. Gekko said: "Besides the obvious (stocks, IRA, 401K, HSBC Account, CDs) and the house I'm working on purchasing... um... maybe my guitars. Although, the way I play them I'm sure they've depreciated big time! I take care of them the same way Pete Townshend does. :dazed052: "

JAP said: "Lots of gold and silver coins, several thousand pre-1986 baseball cards and about 25 vintage electric guitars. I didn't buy these things for investment purposes, but because they were childhood hobbies of mine. Their value has significantly appreciated over the last 25 years :) I don't own any real estate, but if I did, it would be something easy to get in and out of... like a REIT."

FirefighterB said: "I've got some baseball cards that are worth crap now (mid 80s-early 90s) because I enjoyed them back then and you always hear those stories about moms trashing BB cards. Guns - I enjoy them for the same reasons you all do. Plus, I've got a good friend that manages a gun store and range that can hook up great deals on anything, and he's got more guns than Commando. A Vintage 1969 Rolex Daytona Cosmograph. Interesting story on that one. It really has no personal value to me and the chance of me needing to have something this expensive dangling off my wrist are slim to none. Really I'm only holding on to it because I don't have any idea how to sell it without getting ripped off somehow. A totally original 1978 Corvette 25th Anniversay Pace Car that my dad bought brand new. I still have the window sticker and super slick factory AM/FM/CB radio. This investment, however, will NEVER be sold. If I end up tossed out on the street, I'd sleep in this thing before I sold it. I'm definitely interested in getting into real estate as another investment vehicle, but I need to select a location before I get into all of that."

Rbreb13 said: "Other investments: My house, which I own free and clear. Even if it is an older POS mobile home. My gun collection and reloading equipment. Some coins and gold/silver bullion. Also some gold dust I've panned out of some rivers and creeks around here. I also have about a dozen or more computers but they mainly lose value over time, LOL!"

Harry said: "Right now I'm sitting on a mountain of 1950s and 1960's comic books and NY Daily News Sunday Funny papers...as well as an old coin collection..####us a few antiques. Plus I collect old toys...roots and such. My ex and I did well flipping 3 houses. Oddly we didn't even know we were doing it. We bought...fixed up...lived there awhile and got board and moved and did it 2 more times. It made fopr a nice split for the divorce. Now I try to finese 3 accounts. 2 are in Scottrade...(1) IRA and (1) non-IRA for play money. At work a pile of money comes out of my check each week and lands in a group of 5 funds."

I read voraciously, talk with every investor I come across, and practice using every investment vehicle I can get my hands on, which is why I'm here. I collect 1000 oz. silver bars, cigars, books, old American cartography (I have this amazing map of New York in my room from the 1800s) and women."

(I know the underlying value increases as you rent them so it's a win-win situation, hopefully.)
so far so good, lol.... general rule of thumb is, if the rent doesnt cover mortgage, taxes, & common charges, its prob not a good idea....however, that all depends on your down payment...####viously the more you put down, the less your mortgage, so you have to run the numbers with whatever you're comfortable putting down.... when do they generate money? well according to the IRS they always generate money, lol....but ive got a while before they pay themselves off completely....lets put it this way, the two i bought back in '01 & '02 rented for ~$1100, i currently have those two rented @ 1300 & 1350, so after mort. taxes and CC, the two of them generate ~$450/mo. the third condo i bought end of '04, so that one is still barely breaking even month to month.... real estate is all about timing....i graduated college very fortunate, ZERO debt....i happened to have a little bit of money from my parents, and a real estate market that was getting ready to explode....my two original condo's have easily appreciated 70% each since i bought them...."

The greedy, scumbag real estate agents around here are something else. They're doing everything and anything to lure in buyers. It's very amusing to watch the market crumble around me. The amount of real estate radio programs in San Diego have increased significantly... gee I wonder why? :sad010:  RE seems like a headache/hassle to me. I don't like my money tied up for very long periods of time. If you don't time it correctly, you have to sit on it for many years to get decent appreciation. IMO, the 2000-2005 RE market was a fluke... all the stars were perfectly aligned. We probably won't see anything like again for the next 30-50 years, maybe longer. If I want to own RE I'll buy a REIT. A few clicks of a mouse and I'm in, or out."
