Yeah, his premise was right, but he was just a little early. I wonder if he reupped after that loss?"

My partners at RDFn.com have mentioned a arbitrage on the buying Berkshire Hathaway and shorting the railroads.
Willing to discuss."

That's like you or I losing our lunch money.
I doubt he lost any sleep over that lost bet. :not_worthy:"

I've heard some interesting stuff about 1st quarter being BAD.
Start of a recession kinda stuff.
BUT...if Buffet bought in, well...they buy for the REALLY long term anyway right (like...through the next 5 or 6 recessions right?)?"

Kloewer said: "I'm getting in on this late (I've been out-of-state all week), but I've held the oft-overlooked Kansas City Southern (KSU) for a couple years. So I follow rail-related news as much as I can.
RR stocks are cyclical, as their earnings tend to ebb and flow with the broader economy. But they've got a couple aces in the hole as far as I can tell. The first is coal. Aside from river barges, railcars are the only way to get coal to power plants--this can't be outsourced to India, and our demand for electricity isn't likely to recede.
Second is delivering shipping containers from west coast ports. As Asia (mostly China) supplies more and more of our stuff, the rails will move it from ocean to isle. This is why I'm so optimistic about KSU. They own the line running from the Lazaro Cardenas port facility in Mexico. They're also constructing a terminal at the port slated for completion next year. With U.S. ports on the west coast near their maximum capacities without room for expansion (notably LA), KSU's Mexican terminal could turn into a major hub for Asian-American trade.
So Kansas City Southern is a good bet in my opinion, though I'll wait to see if it backs off a bit before I add to my position. But I will definitely buy more in advance of December 2008, when its Mexican port terminal will be finished."
