Actually buying wine as an "investment" is a crap shoot.... buying quality vintages while they're young, and storing them away for later - is an investment in your enjoyment down the road."

But doesn't it go bad at some point?"

Good wine, cared for and sealed properly - can age for 100 years without adverse affect. However, if there is the tiniest leak in the seal... you have to use that $1000 bottle of wine for salad vinegar....."

That reminds me of the movie "Sideways."
Some vintages come into their peak after a lot of years in a wine cellar. An old friend of mine recently went into making her own beer and wine. I've also noticed a number of little micro breweries that that guest can make their own
beer and bring it home.
I think more people are starting to take this up as a hobby.."
thezster said: "Home brewing is a hugely popular sideline for lots of folks. My wife, bless her soul, is a judge for regional/national beer festivals - and as such gets lots of exposure in the homebrew industry also. Granted, her job tends to put us in the limelight for this particular industry - but you would be amazed at the number of folks with a brewery in their basements..... (Including us)...."

My neighbor across the way makes the best strawberry wine I've ever had!"

I agree. It's kinda' like collecting baseball cards. If you're lucky, some of those rookies will become all stars... but, the real reason you should be a collector is for the fun of it."

You need a perfect environment for them too... Watch your cellar flood in the next rain storm and see the money disappear"

True... if you don't end up with more money from such a collection, at least you'll have more prestige."

Hehe...... Nothing like a Box-O-Wine to brighten up one's weekend!"

Airelon said: "I actually have a collection that I track. Wines from around the country and world. Just put some in there from California's El Dorado County from when I was out west.
However, I would never view it as an investment. An asset, yes, that I do track. Which I think would put it in the 'wealth' column rather than the 'investment' column."
AlfredSokol said: "It stops being an asset as soon you pop that cork."
Airelon said: "True enough. :)
Tis why I tell folks if it's something they're going to do, you have to view the whole collection as a dwindeling asset. But not the individual bottles. I like to maintain around at least 70 bottles. If you find a wine you like, then collect at least 6 bottles of it. I'm more comfortable with the entire collection being 120 +. That's why ones would have to view it as the collection as a whole."
AlfredSokol said: "Hey, at least wine collecting makes you look sophisticated :)"
Airelon said: "Considering that I have no problems giving the wife a dutch oven, I guess I'll take all the good PR I can get . . . :)
Nothing beats a good Mondavi though. I have some new stuff I'm itching to try from when I was out west, from a little place called MiaFlores. I have a Muscat Canelli dessert I'm dying to get into. I'm not usually one for dessert wines, but this stuff is out of this world. Wife says we have to wait until we have a shin-dig though. :("
