Investing in small businessesInvesting in small businesses

This guy really knew his stuff, though. Have you ever invested in someone's small business?"
FirefighterB said: "I never have. However, my degree is in Entrepreneurship and I've definitely seen the positive, and the negative, of investing in a small business.
However, I've not heard much about investing in a business that you don't know about. By that, I mean a business not started by a friend. I have a little extra capital and think I'm fairly good at picking up on what is or isn't a profitable business. However, I'm pretty new to NYC and I don't have any friends in the city wanting to start a business.
So, not to hijack the thread, but have any of you invested in a business that you didn't find out about through a friend?
Also, to add another question, how do/did you "find" businesses that are for sale or looking for an influx of cash? Any good websites or resources you can pass along?"
Heather said: "I never have, either. It seems most investments in small companies come from friends or family members of those starting them and usually seem to end with them selling out to someone else for a lot more money a few years down the road.
.. or making it public and cashing in as the stock goes up ..
It seems like it could be an interesting thing to do if you've got the extra coin."
FirefighterB said: "Seems like it'd be a good idea to connect investors with needy businesses. I know they have a website that allows you to loan extra money you might have to people who don't have the greatest of credit.
Maybe it'd be a good business venture to set up a website that connects businesses with angel investors from across the country/world, if there isn't already one."

Search "Business Broker" in Google, or check out www.businessbroker.net. You could also check your yellow pages for business brokers."

I checked out that site - it's more for selling businesses than it is to find investorsfor existing businesses, but it could come in handy for someone looking to "sell out.""

FirefighterB said: "Thanks for the link, Klower. I'll check it out.
Darren - where are you finding the matchmakers for $$$ and businesses? If there isn't a good one online, I'm going to go out and make friends with someone good with computers because, hell, you could set up a multitude of different website formats for connecting people willing to invest and people needing extra capital."

If you don't mind me asking Alfred, what type of business was it your friend started? Did he have a good idea that you liked or was it more of the type of person?"
AlfredSokol said: "A20, it was both.
It was for a website (an interest of mine), and the guys is just very smart. Its hard not be interested in website investments when the idea is fresh."

The program accomplishes this goal by providing tax credits to investors who make capital investment in small businesses certified by the Arizona Department of Commerce . To view the list of businesses that have been certified under this program please click here.An investor seeking an income tax credit must document to Commerce the investment was made in either a qualified rural or bioscience company or any other qualified small business. For a qualified bioscience or rural company, the tax credit may total up to 35% of the investment amount over three years; for any other qualified business, the tax credit may total up to 30% over three years. If the tax credits exceed the investor’s income tax liability, any unused tax credit amount may be carried forward for up to three taxable years as long as the investor timely claims the credits with Revenue.
Commerce may authorize up to $20 million in tax credits to qualified investors beginning July 1, 2006 through June 30, 2011. The tax credits will be authorized on a first come, first served basis, which is established by the date and time the investor files an application with Commerce. Download the Angel Tax Credit Allocation Table to view the remaining amount of tax credits available."

Darren,
Do you have a recommendation for finding an angels who deal with Adult Services? Because my website is adult (it's not porn, per se- but it is limited to people over 18), most services aren't interested in even talking to me. The ones who do turn away because I need less than $100,000, and my exit strategy is in 3 years. Then there are those who only fund start-ups, and my site is already live (with 60,000 index loads the first three months).
Sigh. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
