Modular Homes

While doing a bit of research online I came across a company called Falcon Ridge that makes modular homes on permanent foundations. They claim that the houses are just as good as site built houses as far as looks, but hold together better over time and are a bit cheaper. Anyone know anything about these kinds of houses? Is this something I should look into a bit more or avoid? Thanks"

They're basically the same as a a stick built house except they build them in a factory so that helps keep costs down. Modular builders don't have to contend with weather or other delays like subcontracters. Only downside is they only have several models to choose from and yours will look like everyone elses. I plan on upgrading to a modular within the next 2-3 years myself. I live in a POS mobile home now. Take a tour of modulars, I'm sure you'll like them."

I talked to a few places and toured a few models, but it turned out that they were more expensive than the standard builders in my area and also most places I wanted to build had zoning laws in place to keep out mobile and modular construction. As far as the construction goes I'd say its probably slightly stronger than most stick built houses. Anyone who's looked at a model thats not covered with all the pretty trim and really saw the guts inside will know what I'm talking about. In an example the inner walls are double thick (around 8") since its extremely important to keep the structure intact while going down the highway at 50-70mph. Then making severe turns and possibly twisting as it exits a road way onto the construction site. The kicker for me was the bottom line cost was considerably more than other home construction techniques, but if they're giving a good deal in your area I'd go for it. Also several of the companies that sell factory direct had lots of models to choose from, but on top of that you could give them prints and their engineers could create a layout that could be factory assembled and delivered just as their models. I did check out one of these houses and I have to admit that I thought they were really nice. In fact I couldn't even tell the difference between the modular house and the stick built homes I looked at. They are also priced well for the area, so I think I might go for this. Thanks again for the info."
