If you are on a budget and you want ot minimize expenses and most of all if you are going to invest for the long term (and you should since you're young)
consider
http://www.buyandhold.com or sharebuilder.com
I believe buy and hold is a bit better as they also offer real time tades.
let me explain a bit, they both offer trading of a selected group of stock ....
a very large selections ie. you won't find penny stocks but the selection as I say is very large, indexes, funds etc..
the fees for b&h is $2.99 per trade , $6.99 for unlimited trading share builder should be similar, you can set automatic deposit and also invest automatically in your portfolio at several intervals
if you have a position that pays dividends you can reinvest them for free
this keeps expenses down to a minimum
the real time trades aren't that great better off with a dedicated "real time trading" brokerage like the other mentioned .
cheers"
